Before you hire a financial advisor...
As a fiduciary (someone who is legally and in my case morally) required to put your interests ahead of my own, I am wary of financial advisors. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have one. There's nothing wrong with getting expert advice as long as you receive full disclosure and, just as important, you understand what is being disclosed. But many financial advisors also act as investment managers: they tell you where you should invest your money and then the charge you for acting on their advice.
