What happens when you get a year end distribution?

December is the month where stock mutual funds typically make their dividend, interest and short & long-term gain distributions (if they have them to distribute). When this happens, you get a check (often automatically invested in more shares unless you request otherwise) and the price of the mutual fund goes down. What!? Why does that happen?
